Research into magazine genre

I considered many different ideas while going through the process of what Genre my magazine should be.
I contemplated doing a magazine featuring more articles based around classical music, but I took into consideration that my target audience was students and consequently decided that classical music would only appeal to a niche market - meaning the majority of people would not be interested in this genre of magazine.
I then considered a type of magazine that students would enjoy, read and subsequently buy.
From this, I decided on creating a magazine similar to 'NME' or 'Kerrang!' with a genre of 'alternative/rock'.
I believe this will suit my target audience as it is a popular category of music among a wide selection of students.
I decided to further ensure this genre was the correct one to choose for my magazine through creating and distributing a survey in relation to music magazine genre preferences of my target audience of students.
